Paula Julie Abdul was born in 1962 to Harry and Lorraine (a canadian). She started taking Jazz, Tap, and ballet dance classes at an early age. About midway through highschool, Paula received a scholarship to a dance camp near Palm Springs. This gave her the skills she needed at California State University, in her freshman year, to audition for the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team - the Laker Girls. In a matter of months she became the head choreographer.
One day, while cheering for the Lakers, the Jacksons noticed Paula, and earnestly got her to sign to do the choreography for the video to their single Torture. Her success with the choreography in the video led to a career in doing choreography for music videos.
Paula scraped her savings together to make a singing demo. Her voice untrained but her remarkable dancing skills probed to be what the MTV pop industry needed. She worked tirelessly improving her dancing and singing ability.
