TLDR

Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden have welcomed their third child, a baby boy named Nautas, as the actress leans into late-in-life motherhood while reigniting her Hollywood career.

The birth announcement did not arrive on a red carpet or in a glossy spread. It appeared in a heartfelt Instagram post from Benji Madden, the 47-year-old Good Charlotte guitarist who has become Diaz’s partner in privacy, parenting, and carefully chosen public moments.

In his message, Madden wrote, “Cameron and I are Happy, Excited, and feeling so BLESSED to announce the birth of our third child, Nautas Madden. Welcome to the world, son.” He followed with a family manifesto that summed up where the couple is now. “We love life with our family, our kids are healthy and happy, and we are grateful, having a blast. Sending all our best wishes, the Madden family.”

True to the way they have handled all of their children, the pair did not share a photo of Nautas. Instead, Madden posted an image of a ship and a breakdown of the name’s meaning, which he linked to ideas of “sailor, navigator, voyager” and to someone who sets out into the unknown without fear. Diaz quietly surfaced in the comments with stars and hearts, keeping the focus on his words rather than on a newborn reveal.

Nautas joins big sister Raddix, born in December 2019, and brother Cardinal, born in March 2024. The couple previously welcomed both older children via surrogate, a choice they have never turned into a storyline, even as it has made them part of a broader conversation around fertility, privacy, and parenthood in midlife.

For Diaz, motherhood arrived after most of her peers had already raised toddlers into teenagers. She has spoken candidly about what that feels like. “I love being a mother. It is the best, best, best part of my life,” she told OK! Magazine. “The only pressure for me now is I have to live to be, like, 107, you know?”

She acknowledged the age gap she feels when she looks around at other moms. “The women who have children my age are literally 20 years younger, and that is an interesting place to be because I am not that age,” she said. “And that is totally OK, but I want to feel vital like that for my child.” Then came the line that cut through the glamour. “I am just trying to stay alive, just like every other mother.”

That tension between vitality and vulnerability runs alongside a very deliberate career arc. Diaz stepped away from Hollywood after “Annie” in 2014, choosing a decade focused largely on home life. She then returned in “Back in Action” with Jamie Foxx and is now working opposite Keanu Reeves in the Apple TV project “Outcome.” “To be able to still do this at such a high level with people like Keanu Reeves is a thrill for me,” she said. “I am glad I took a break, and I was able to focus on family and a part of my life that means so much to me, but I still love doing this. It is the best job in the world.”

She is also filming the New York romantic comedy “The Sham” and is set to revive Princess Fiona in a new “Shrek” movie planned for 2027. Each project nudges her back into the center of pop culture, even as her personal life grows more crowded with bedtime routines, school runs, and baby bottles.

Diaz and Madden married in January 2015 after being introduced by her friend Nicole Richie and his twin brother, Joel Madden. Their wedding at home in Beverly Hills reflected the same understated approach that defines their family announcements today. Nearly a decade later, the image of a ship for Nautas feels fitting for a couple that keeps steering between global fame and a fiercely guarded private harbor.

How do you see Cameron Diaz balancing this new chapter of motherhood with her return to the screen, and which era of her career do you revisit first?
