For months, Duane “Dog” Chapman and his wife, Francie Frane, have been grieving a loss they described as an “incomprehensible, tragic accident.” Now that private heartbreak is colliding with the criminal justice system.

Gregory Zecca, Dog the Bounty Hunter’s stepson and Francie’s son, has been arrested in Florida in connection with the fatal shooting of his 13-year-old son, Anthony, a death the family had publicly framed as a terrible mistake.

Dog the Bounty Hunter’s blended family is now watching one of their own face the most serious kind of scrutiny, while still mourning a child whose short life played out, in part, on their social media feeds.

Arrest After a Family’s Unthinkable Loss

According to Page Six, which cited TMZ’s reporting, authorities in Florida obtained an arrest warrant charging Zecca with aggravated manslaughter of a child with a firearm, as well as using a firearm while under the influence. The charges stem from an incident in July 2025, when Anthony was fatally shot at a friend’s home.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office in Florida concluded that Zecca was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting, Page Six reported, citing the investigation. The case, which unfolded far from Hollywood soundstages, now threatens to draw Dog’s long-running reality TV legacy into an entirely different kind of spotlight.

Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, speaking to TMZ and quoted by Page Six, called it a devastating case for everyone involved. “This was a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy,” he said.

Inside the Night That Changed Everything

The investigation paints a detailed and deeply troubling picture of the hours leading up to Anthony’s death. According to TMZ, as summarized by Page Six, Zecca had allegedly been drinking for several hours before settling in to watch a televised UFC match with his son at a friend’s house.

While there, authorities allege, Zecca consumed both marijuana and alcohol. TMZ reported that investigators believe he repeatedly handled a firearm in the boy’s presence, practicing drawing it from his waistband and dry-firing it. Page Six noted that, according to law enforcement, the gun had initially been rendered safe by removing the magazine and clearing a live round from the chamber.

At some point, however, a round was apparently back in the weapon. A single shot fired, and 13-year-old Anthony was struck and killed. Sheriff Rambosk told TMZ, per Page Six, that “this case underscores that devastating tragedy that can result from mixing firearms, alcohol, and drugs.” He also added, “Our hearts are with everyone affected by this loss.”

For investigators, it became a question of alleged reckless behavior with a deadly weapon. For the family, it was the night their grandson, son, and step-grandson never came home.

Dog and Francie Grieve a Grandson

In the days after the shooting, the public heard not from Zecca himself, but from the famous couple at the center of the family’s orbit. Dog, the longtime reality star whose name became synonymous with bounty hunting on television, and his wife, Francie, issued an emotional statement to TMZ about Anthony’s death.

“We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible, tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony,” they said, according to Page Six.

That wording, “tragic accident,” became the family’s framing of what had happened. Behind the scenes, however, detectives were still working. The sheriff said his office conducted an “exhaustive and thorough investigation, examining every element of what happened through witness statements, forensic testing, subpoenas, search warrants, and more,” according to the quotes carried by TMZ and Page Six. “I commend their hard work and professionalism in uncovering the facts in an incredibly difficult case,” he added.

Page Six reported that Zecca was not initially taken into custody at the time of the shooting, though the investigation was immediately launched. Days later, TMZ reported that he was placed on a psychiatric hold and heavily sedated amid fears he might hurt himself, a detail Page Six also highlighted.

A family representative told TMZ that the psychiatric hold was because Zecca was stricken by grief, not because he felt guilty of a crime in relation to the shooting, Page Six noted. It was a glimpse into the private emotional storm surrounding a man who, until now, had lived far outside his famous stepfather’s media glare.

Silence, Scrutiny, and What Comes Next

As of Page Six’s report, a representative for Dog, also known as Duane Chapman, had not responded to a request for comment on Zecca’s arrest. The reality star, who has spent years on television pursuing fugitives, is now watching someone in his own family face the power of the criminal justice system.

Francie, who married Dog after the death of his first wife, Beth Chapman, is now navigating the roles of mother to the accused, grandmother to the victim, and public partner to a man whose life’s work has been capturing people wanted by the law. Gregory is her son. Anthony was her grandson. Dog, who often spoke publicly about faith, family, and redemption, is now in the uncomfortable position of grieving while the world reads court language that includes words like “aggravated” and “manslaughter.”

For many longtime followers of Dog’s story, the tragedy stands in sharp contrast to the rough-and-tumble, ultimately triumphant image that made him a household name. On television, the tension usually ended with a capture, a tearful talk in the backseat of a truck, and a moral reset. Real life, as this case shows, is not scripted, and it is rarely tidy.

Legally, Zecca will have the opportunity to contest the charges and present his side in court. Emotionally, the family’s reality is already set. A 13-year-old boy is gone, a father faces potential prison, and a famous patriarch’s household is marked by a kind of tragedy that no reality show can edit around.

Whether the public ultimately views this as a crime, an accident, or something in between will unfold over time, in court filings and quiet family moments alike. For now, Dog the Bounty Hunter’s clan is left in the most painful of in-between spaces, caught between their love for Anthony, their support for Gregory, and the harsh language of an arrest warrant that has forced their private grief back into the public eye.
