TLDR

Kimberly Van Der Beek marked the first Father’s Day since James Van Der Beek’s death with an intimate Instagram tribute, calling the beloved actor a marvel as a dad.

The first Father’s Day without James Van Der Beek arrived quietly, not on a red carpet but in a carousel of family photos on Kimberly Van Der Beek’s Instagram. The actor, who spent the late 1990s and early 2000s living in viewers’ hearts as Dawson Leery on “Dawson’s Creek,” was remembered in images that had nothing to do with fame and everything to do with fatherhood.

Kimberly shared a series of snapshots of James at home and outdoors with their six children, Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah. In one, he is on a bed surrounded by kids, including a newborn swaddled in a peach blanket. In another, he carries a child by a stream, or offers a piggyback ride, all smiles and inside jokes only families understand.

She paired the images with a message that read like a private letter made public. “Missing you so much and thinking of how magnificent you were in every single way today,” she wrote. “And somehow, from the other side? You continue to parent. You’re a marvel.”

Famous friends stepped into the comments, blurring the line between Hollywood community and family support system. Krysten Ritter wrote, “The best of the best. Happy Father’s Day, James.” Nikki Reed added, “The best of the best forever. We love you so much, James. Wrapping all of your little people in the warmest hugs today, and always.” Mary-Margaret Humes, who played Dawson’s mom on “Dawson’s Creek,” honored him with a tribute of her own.

For many fans, James will always be the sensitive dreamer from “Dawson’s Creek” or the fiery quarterback from “Varsity Blues.” In recent years, though, his public story shifted from teen idol to husband, father of six, and patient navigating a grueling cancer fight. He had been battling stage 3 cancer since August 2023 and eventually revealed his diagnosis after learning, as he put it, that a tabloid was preparing to run the news.

That transparency came with vulnerability about real-life pressures. He shared that treatment had put a financial strain on his family and began selling autographed “Varsity Blues” memorabilia, along with wardrobe and decor from “Dawson’s Creek,” to help fund his care. The nostalgia items that once symbolized peak career moments quietly became lifelines.

In a later Instagram reflection, the “Dancing With the Stars” alum admitted that illness had changed what kind of partner and father he could be. He said he could no longer be the husband who lifted the load for his wife or the dad who picked up his kids and remained physically present in every way.

Kimberly answered that narrative with one of her own. At 43, she wrote that she still saw her husband as a “treasure,” no matter what he felt he could no longer do. “I feel like the luckiest lady in the world to be married to you,” she shared, framing his legacy in love instead of limitation.

Married since 2010, James and Kimberly built a large, visibly close-knit family far from the fictional cul-de-sac of Capeside. On this first Father’s Day without him, the images she chose were not about Dawson, football glory, or ballroom scores. They were snapshots of a dad on boats, in bedrooms, and under wide skies with six kids who will grow up with both the public legend and the private story their mother keeps telling.
