TLDR

Mary Crosby, forever etched in TV history as the woman who shot J.R. on “Dallas” and the daughter of Bing Crosby, resurfaced in Malibu at 66 looking relaxed, grounded, and far from the Hollywood frenzy that once defined her.

Her quiet farmer’s market visit serves as a reminder of a career shaped by a legendary last name, a pop-culture phenomenon, and choices she has openly second-guessed.

Over the weekend, the Daily Mail reported that Mary Crosby made a rare public appearance at the Malibu Farmer’s Market. The 66-year-old actress kept it casual in a patterned dress, brown shoes, and a green tote bag, with a dark beanie over her loose waves. It was a simple Sunday errand, yet for anyone who grew up on primetime soaps, the sight of Kristin Shepherd at the produce stand hits a nostalgic nerve.

Mary was born into show business royalty as the daughter of Bing Crosby and his second wife, actress Kathryn Grant. Her childhood unfolded in the shadow of a man whose voice scored the mid-20th century, from “White Christmas” to “Holiday Inn” and “High Society.” Bing released dozens of albums and hundreds of singles, but at home, his daughter remembers someone far less consumed by the spotlight.

“My father was not at all interested in his work when it was done. He would watch it once, and then that was it,” she recalled in an earlier conversation with The Daily Mail. “I think he found a balance between the business and having a life. For many people in the business, it’s about ego, but dad had so many other things in life that he loved.”

Mary followed him into the business early, turning up on “The Danny Thomas Hour” in the 1960s, then working steadily through the 1970s in shows like “Starsky and Hutch,” “CHiPs,” and “Brothers and Sisters.” Then came “Dallas,” and with it, a twist that would define her public image forever.

Casting her as Kristin Shepherd, the scheming sister of Sue Ellen, the producers eventually made Mary the answer to television’s most famous question: Who shot J.R. Ewing? The reveal episode in the 1980 season became one of the highest-rated broadcasts in TV history and turned Mary into a household name.

At the time, even she had no idea she was the culprit. “I had no idea who had shot J.R., none of us did,” she told Daily Mail. “The producers of the show had everybody shoot J.R., and I mean everybody. The make-up artists were filmed shooting him, the producers were filmed shooting him, Larry himself was filmed shooting himself.”

The role was career-making, but it also became a reference point she never fully escaped. “Dallas was hugely instrumental in putting me on the map. First, I was Bing’s daughter, then I became the girl who shot J.R.,” she said. With the attention came a decision she later regretted.

“After Dallas, I made that classic mistake, having my 15 minutes of fame and thinking I could afford to wait around for more arty roles,” she admitted. “So I put myself out of commission and waited for work that was less available to me. I think if I’d gone full force into television, I would probably have worked nonstop forever.”

Even so, the 1980s and 1990s brought a solid run: “Knots Landing,” “The Fall Guy,” “Hollywood Wives,” “The Love Boat,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and “Beverly Hills, 90210,” along with films such as “Last Plane Out,” “The Ice Pirates,” “The Night Caller,” and “The Legend of Zorro.” Her last listed screen role is the 2014 dramedy “The M Word,” according to IMDb.

Off-screen, Mary married actor Eb Lottimer in the late 1970s, then, after their divorce, wed attorney Mark Brodka in the late 1990s. They share two sons, and it is that private life, far from the J.R. shooting range, that now seems to matter most to her.

“I’m very, very happy in my life and with the people in my life,” she has said. “Every phase of life brings different gifts, and I am so happy to be where I am today.” Seen wandering through a Malibu market at 66, the former soap villain and Hollywood heiress looks very much like a woman who has finally claimed that balance.

Do you still remember watching the “Who Shot J.R.?” reveal, and how does it feel to see Mary Crosby living such a different chapter now?
