TLDR

James Pearce Jr. is not expected at the Atlanta Falcons offseason program while facing Florida felony charges and harrowing allegations from ex Rickea Jackson, putting both his rising NFL career and public image in limbo.

The Atlanta Falcons were supposed to open their voluntary offseason program with a first-round defensive centerpiece who looked like the future. Instead, 22-year-old pass rusher James Pearce Jr. is expected to stay away, his second season clouded by a Florida criminal case and disturbing claims from his former girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson.

Prosecutors in Florida have brought four charges tied to an alleged confrontation in Doral. Court records accuse Pearce of following Jackson as she drove to a police station, then repeatedly ramming his Lamborghini SUV into her car. He now faces three felony counts, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting an officer with violence, along with a charge of aggravated stalking.

According to arrest documents, Pearce allegedly fled when officers tried to stop him. The records say he crashed at an intersection, then attempted to run on foot before being detained by multiple officers. Images of the arrest raced across social media, colliding with the carefully curated highlight reels and draft-night photos that had built his early-star aura.

The legal drama is tangled with a three-year relationship that has now fully ruptured in public. Jackson, a forward for the Los Angeles Sparks, sought a protective order in February. In court filings obtained by the Daily Mail, she told the court she “feared for her life” and wrote that Pearce “verbally and physically abused me on more than one occasion.” Jackson also alleged that he threatened to kill her and place a bag over her head.

She told the court she believed “James will kill me” if judges did not intervene. A temporary injunction was granted. Pearce is currently ordered to have no contact with Jackson and to stay away from her home, work, and vehicle, with a hearing on a permanent injunction scheduled.

In those same filings, Jackson described an earlier public clash at a gas station. She alleged that Pearce “attacked me by snatching my cellular phone out of my hand, pulling my hair, and taking my personal belongings,” and claimed that after their breakup, he embarked on what she called a “never-ending campaign of threats, physical assaults and abuse against me,” even sleeping in his car outside her home. A separate police report records her fear that she was being stalked and that he had tried to break into her apartment.

Pearce has denied wrongdoing. His attorneys told ESPN they stand by a previous statement that he “maintains his innocence and urges the public to understand that while allegations have the power to shape a narrative, that it is hardly the full, complete story.” The criminal case is ongoing, and no verdict has been reached.

The NFL is watching. A league spokesperson told ESPN, “We continue to monitor all developments in the matter, which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.” For the Falcons, who committed $16.8 million to Pearce last year, the situation is a high-stakes collision of on-field plans, brand reputation, and the league’s evolving response to domestic violence allegations.

Photos from the NFL Draft, where Jackson stood beside Pearce as he entered the league, now read differently in light of restraining orders and felony counts. One image captured the beginning of an NFL dream. The next chapter will be written in courtrooms, front offices, and, for now, away from the practice field.
